BRITISH MERCANTILE CLAIMS 1775 - 1803
[Pp. 10-13) Lawrence Taliaferro, Orange. £6.13.3 3/4, due McCall, Smellie & Co.; £13. 4.2, due Bell & Stanfield; £662.19.7-1/2, due James Ritchie & Co. He died in Orange County in 1798 and left a very valuable estate both real and per sonal, vastly more than sufficient for the payment of his debts. His representatives are his widow, executrix, and sons Hay, Baldwin and Lawrence, executors, of whom his son Hay is the acting one. Mr. John McCoull of Orange who has been engaged in the collection of the
debts of James Ritchie & Co. for many years since the peace stated that in 1792 he presented to Col. Lawrence Taliaferro the note with a statement of the interest and proposed to him to grant a new bond for the whole amount. Col. Taliaferro acknowledged the justice of the demand and proposed to pay it in a short time but declined to execute a new bond. Should the debt now be lost by the plea of the Statute of Limitations, it can only be imputed to the negligence of the creditors and their agent.
