John and Lucy Botts and their family lived in Stafford County, Virginia until the year 1787 when they arrived in Culpeper County, Virginia
John Botts and his brother William were rich land owners. In 1793, the brothers, applied for land grants in Kentucky. that year, they traveled to Kentucky to find their new homes. On November 1, 1793 they settled in Limestone Creek (now Maysville) in Mason county. The first year they worked to prepare the land for the meeting of their families.
In early fall of 1794, John and William returned to Virginia to get the families. Both families then began the long trip to Kentucky in ox drawn wagons. John, Lucy and their nine children arrived in Limestone Creek with some wagon loads of household goods. Traveling together, William and his 7 children arrived there also.
John passed away in 1796 at the age of 42 in Mason County, Kentu cky. He left his wife Lucy and the five children under eleven years of age. The family was well provided for in John's will . William's wife died in 1792, and William died in in 1801 at age 57.
In 1806, Lucy and the children moved to Bracken County, Kentucky near Germantown. In late 1810, Lucy and the family then moved to Boone County, Kentucky. She moved to Bullittsburg Baptist Church, near Gainesville, later called "Idlewild." Lucy's married children, except Richard and Jane, and their families move d there too.
After many years, in 1816 Lucy (Gaines) Botts married a second time to Josephus Waters of Boone County, Kentucky. Lucy passed a way in 1826 at the age of 70.
