      At a Councell held at John Bakers house at the Citie of
      St Maries the 24th Day of October in the 3d yeare of the
      Dominion of the Rtt Honble Charles &ca Annoq Domini 1678:

      Where came before them Robert Leshley and Elizabeth his
      wife according to appointmt by reason of a Peticon exhibited
      p the sd Robert to the Governor and the Governors warrant
      thereupon Dated the 5th instant, wch said Peticon & warrant
      foll: in ordr viz.

      To the Honble Thomas Notley Esqr Ltt Genll & Chiefe Gov-
      ernor of Maryland
      The humble Peticon of Robert Leshley Humbly Sheweth
      That yor Peticoners wife being a woman of an Implacable
      turbulent Spiritt has at severall times unjustly & wrongfully
      made Divers complaints and Accusations against yor Petr
      before severall of his Lopps Justices of the peace of Calvert
      County but finding they tooke not the effect she hoped for,
      and that her Designe of procureing a considersable part of yor
      Petrs Estate to be allowed her for a maintenance with which
      she might live at her pleasure where she listed and quite
      Desert the ffamily and concerns of yor Petr was wholly frus-
      trated, she hath since very falsly injuriously & malitiously
      accused yor Petr of Buggery to the greate scandall & irre-
      parable prejudice of yor Petrs creditt and reputation wch he
      Does & alwaies shall Esteeme of greater price & value then
      his Life.
      Wherefore yor Peticoner humbly prayeth, that yor Honor
      will be gratiously pleased to grant him a Warrant, that she
      may be brought before yor Honor and her complaints & accu-
      sations against yor Petr heard and Examined before yor Honor
      whereby your yor Petr may purge and cleanse himself of that
      grevious scandall cast upon him and that for the future he
      may live more peaceably & comfortably either with his said
      Wife or by allowing her such a maintenance as yor Honor
      shall ordr and Command
      And as in Duty bound he shall ever pray &ca
      The Governors warrant thereupon was Endorsed on the
      back side of the Peticon and is as foll. viz.
      The matter alleadged by the Petr being of more then Ordi-
      nary concern, I recommend the same to the Examination of
      my self and his Lopps: Councell, and Doe hereby will &
      require you James Rumsey that you apprehend Elizabeth
      Leshley the Petrs wife and have her Body before my self and
      p. 55 his Lopps Councell at the Citie of St Maries on the ffour &
      Twentieth Day of this instant October next ensueing when &
      where you are also to bring with you the within Peticon.
      Whereof faile not. And for soe Doeing this shall be your
      sufficient warrant. Given undr my hand and Seale this ffifth
      Day of October in the third yeare of the Dominion of the
      Rtt Honble Charles &ca over this Province Annoq Domini
      1678:

      Upon heareing and Examination of the whole matter the
      Substance gathered from thence was that the Peticoner & his
      wife having had severall Differences betweene them wch could
      not be composed Did severall Declare that they were fully
      resolved never any more to live together, She Desireing an
      allowance proportionable to what she had at her Intermar-
      riage with him. He Declared himself willing to allow her
      such a reasonable maintenance as the Governor and Councell
      should think fitt to award her with Due consideration had to
      his Capacity The wch at last they both referred to the Dis-
      cretion of the Governor and Councell to ordr therein what to
      them should seeme meete wch they would submitt to.
      The Governor and Councell haveing Duely and maturely
      considered the prmisses Did ordr viz.

      Octob: 24th 1678:

      Whereas appeared before the Governor and Councell this
      Day Robert Leshley of Calvert County & Elizabeth his wife,
      and Did both jointly and severally openly Declare that for sev-
      erall Differences betweene them both publick and private they
      were fully resolved never to cohabitt together again, and ffor-
      asmuch as the said Elizabeth did Demand a reasonable main-
      tenance to be allowed her by her sd Husband, wch he readily
      consented to they both submitting themselves to the Discre-
      tion of the Governor and Councell to apportion the same as to
      them should seeme meete. It is Ordered
      That the said Robert Leshley pay or cause to be paid
      yearely and every yeare unto the said Elizabeth his wife for
      and Dureing her naturall life the just summe of two thou-
      sand pounds of tobacco for a maintenance and no more.

      pp. 218a MARYLANDE CALVERT COUNTY. KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I KATHERINE BRIGHTWELL Wife of RICHARD BRIGHTWELL of ye County aforesaid for divers good consideracon especially consideringe ye great distance of place between here & Virginia to travell have appointed my Trusty and well beloved Friend THOMAS LANDE my full & lawfull Attorney for me to acknowledge all my right in five hundred acres of lande in Virginia wch my husband RICHARD BRIGHTWELL bath sold unto JOHN GREENE of ST. MARYS COUNTY of ye PROVINCE aforesaid Planter and I doe confirms all my said Attorney shall doe. in Witness I have sett my hand & Seale this 9th day of November 1691

      THIS INDENTURE made this thirteenth day of November 1691 Betweene RICHARD BRIGHTWELL of CALVERT COUNTY in the PROVINCE of MARYLANDE and KATHERINE his Wife of the one part and JOHN GREENE of ye said PROVINCE OF MARYLANDE & Countie of ST. MARYS of other part Wittnesseth that said RICHARD BRIGHTWELL & KATHERINE his Wife for ye summe of Eighty thousand poundes of good sounde & merchandable Tobacco & casque to them paid have sold ye said JOHN GREENE his heires a parcell of lands containinge Five hundred acres beinge in ye County of Stafford beinge part of a greater dividend bounded thus, to begin att a marked Gumme and thence to run out into ye Woods accordinge to ye Course & distances mentioned in a conveyance dated ye 10th day of March 1680/1 granted JOHN MATTHEWS the first taker up of ye said land to one EVAN JONES who married one of ye Daughters of ye said JOHN MATTHEW'S & by ye said EVAN JONES sold to ye said RICHARD BRIGHTWELL as by conveyance dated ye ninth day of Marcb 1680/1 To Have and To Hold ye said land to him ye said JOHN GREENE in as full and ample manner as was before sold by said EVAN JONES to RICHARD BRIGHTWELL In Wittness whereof ye parties hath sett their handes Sealer
      In presence of THEODORICK BLAND , RICHD. BRIGHTWELL JOHN WAUGH
      This above sale of lande was acknowledged in the County Court of Stafford by RICHARD BRIGHTWELL & THOMAS LANDE Attorney of ye said KATHERINE BRIGHTWELL unto the aforesaid JOHN GREENE on the 13th day of November 1691 and was then recorded.
