    • The date of Mary's marriage to Giles Brent appears unrecorded. In May of 1679, Mary secured only the second judicial separation recorded in Virginia on the grounds of cruelty. Following Brent's death, she married Francis Hammersley. (C.H. Brent)

      p. 5 WILLIAM NICHLESS of BRISTOLL, Marriner, doe hereby constitute and appoint my loving Friend. GEORGE BRENT, of Stafford County in Virginia, my true and lawful! Attorney to prosecute my suite against MRS. MARY BRENT, Administrator; of Coll. GILES BRENT deceased. for protested Bills of Exchange drawn upon Captaine ;JNO; ENGLAND of BRISTOLL, Merchant. signed by ye said GILES BRENT and made payable to ye said NICHLESS for eleaven pounds ten shillings and four pence Sterl., bearing date from Virginia ye 4th of April 1677, and by THOMAS HARTWELL, Notary Publique, presented to ye said JNO: ENGLAND and by him denied to he paid as ye said Notary certified in his Publique Instrument of Protest, dated ye twelfth of August 1679; And what my said Attorney shall act and doe or cause to be done in ye premisses, I doe by these presents confirme and raffle. GILLS BRENT late of the County aforesaid deced., send Greeting, Now Know yee that I ye said MARY BRENT in ye qualificacon aforesaid as alsoe be in ge Guardian to my Son, GILES BRENT, ye Son heire of his Father, Coil, GILES BRENT, deced, being well assured and perfectly knowing that my said Husband, Col. GILES BRENT, did covenant and agree with THOMAS DERRICKE SENIOR of MATTHYES POYNT in ye County aforesaid, Plantr:, to left and sett to him, ye said THOMAS DERRICKE for (three Children of ye sd. TifO; DERRICKE) and for ye longest liver of him, all that pte: or p:cell of Land sittuate lying and being in MATTHYES POYNT Divident unleased, lying betwixt the Leased Land of him ye said THOMAS DERRICKE and ye Leased Land of him ye said THOMAS HAYWARD, Coopr;, and am alsoe well knowing that my said Husband, Coll GILLS BRENT deced., did receive a summe of Tobo; in part of pay for ye grant of ye said Lease, butt itt soe pleased God that before ye sealing of ye Lease, ye said Call, GILES BRENT died, leaving his Son an Infant and because I ye said MARY BRENT am willing to doe any such act that my tend to ye settlement and discharging all of obligations that my said Huband was anyway oblidged to as far as my power extends, I have therefore left and sett and doe by these presents Lett and sett all that p:cell of land aforesd: now unleased lying betwixt ye Leased Land of THOMAS DERRICKE SENIOR and THOMAS HAYWARD, Cooper, unto WILLIAM DERRICKE, JNO: DERRICKS MARY DERRICKSE, (Children of THOMAS SENIOR) for and during their naturall lives and for and duringe ye naturall life of ye longest liver of them, or to their assigns, together with all priviledges as of Hawking, Hunting, Fishing and Fowling as long as on ye Patten( is granted they or their assignes or one of them paying therefore to mee ye said MARY BRENT or to my Son, GILES BRENT, when itt shall please God he shalt arrive act ye age of one & twenty yeares old or to either of us our heires Ezors. or Admors. yearly on ye twenty fourth day of Decembr: as long as this Lease shall last; Fifty pounds of Tobo: and Caske, alsoe said WILLM: JNO: MARY doe covenant and agree that they or any one of them will punt as Orchard of one hundred Apple trees and keepe and preserve ye same by good fence from harme of Cattle and to renue them from tyme to tyme as they shall dye and decay, alsoe that if the within Leased Land shall for two whole yeares together remaine voyd of Christian Inhabitants, then itt shall bee lawfull for me, ye said MARY BRENT, my Son GILES BRENT or he heires of ye said GILES BRENT into ye within granted premisses to reenter and to hold in her, his or their right see if this Lease never had bin made; In Witness whereof ye parties to this Lease have interchangably sett our hands and scales ye day & yeare first above written
