Tompkins/Tomkins/Thompkins/Thomkins, Giles - The name of Giles’ wife has not been found. For an interesting discussion of Giles and his pregnant wife in 1665, see Charles Co., Md. Court Records, Liber B, p. 492, and Archives of Maryland, Vol. 53, Preface, p. xxxiv. Giles Tompkins d. testate Apr. 27, 1685 (probate date) in Charles Co., Md., predeceased by his wife. Source: Maryland Calendar of Wills, Vol. 1, pp. 156-7. Giles’ will leaves his entire estate to son Giles Tompkins [Jr.] In 1681, son Giles had been bound to John Standbury for 7 years. Source: Maryland Prerogative Court, Testamentary Proceedings, Liber 14, p. 118. A Joan Tomkins, age 20, was a servant to Randolph Hanson on Mar. 8, 1686/7. Source: Charles Co., Md. Court Records, Liber N, p. 151. Although Giles Tompkins, father and son, are the only known Tompkins’ in Charles Co. at this time, the will of Giles [Sr.] indicates that Joan is not his daughter. This Joan Tompkins would not be the same person as Mrs. Jane Tompkinson, the widow of John Tompkinson about Oct. 1672, because she had remarried to Edward Price by June 1673. Source: Archives of Maryland, Vol. 60, pp. 445 and 495. John and Jane Tompkinson had no children. No later record is found for the servant Joan Tomkins who was age 20 in Mar. 1686/7.

This latter record, the will of Sarah’s mother, Mrs. Mary Davis Brown, is shown as reversing the order of the husbands of daughters Sarah and Ann.
