    • === Research Note from John Beatty
Caleb Litton was born at Otter St Mary Devon in 1678, the son of Michael Lutton and Joane/Johan Trenow (not Polleckfield, as is shown widely online). The origin of these errors appears to be a typewritten manuscript by Balfour Oliver Lytton in the Montgomery County Historical Society. He married (1) in Ottery St Mary on 26 Feb 1715/6, Jane Teller. She died without children at Ottery St. Mary on 10 Dec. 1718. Caleb married (2) Grace (__), who may have been a Burton, but her maiden name is not proven. There is no record of their marriage, and the 23 March 1723 is without historical evidence. Grace cannot be proven as a daughter of Thomas Burton, nor can Thomas Burton's wife be proven as Grace Hartley. Caleb and Grace have only seven proven children, based on baptismal records and Caleb's 1763 will: Caleb, John, Sarah, Elizabeth, Johanna, Michael, and Grace. Caleb Jr. is the Caleb who died in 1764 in Frederick County, whose wife was Margaret, the administratrix of his estate. Note that in the payments to heirs that you cite dated 1767, Caleb is not among the surviving heirs at that time. He fits perfectly with the man who married Margaret. There is no evidence that this Caleb had any children. The siblings of the elderly Caleb can be found inthe Otter St. Mary baptismal records, and I can send them if you like. There is no evidence that Ruth, wife of Thomas Wilcoxen, was a Letton.
