      Subject: Peter Banner and family

You have listed on your page that Sarah Banner, dau. of Peter Banner and Elizabeth Wood, married James Thomas. James Thomas had a wife named Sarah and they were married before 1744.

According to Carol Mitchell, Peter Banner and Elizabeth Wood weren't married until December 8, 1754, so Sarah wasn't their daughter. That marriage date was probably contained in the bible that Samuel Wood devised to his daughter Ann Briscoe. I'm trying to track it down. Ann Wood m. Robert Briscoe; their son, Gerard Briscoe m. Margaret Baker (of VA); their daughter, Eleanor Briscoe m. Archibald Stuart; their son, Archibald Hugh Holmes Stuart who gave it to his daughter, Susan Baldwin Stuart who m. Rev. Robert Gibson.

"The oldest of these is a Bible published in London in 1715. This was the family bible of Samuel Wood who was my great great grandfather on my mother's side. It was printed by John Baskett, printer to the kings most excellent majesty. It is now much mutilated and defaced by use during the 163 years but the manuscript records are still plainly legible. I have given this bible to my daughter Susan, wife of Rev. Robert A. Gibson. The earliest record in the bible is in these words. "Ann Wood was born October first day in the year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighteen (10/1/1718). Samuel Wood, Jr. was b. 6/22/1721; Susanna Wood was b. 8/26/1724; Elizabeth Wood was b. 1/31/1727; Lydia Wood was b. 10/5/1724; Nathan Wood was b. 1/21/1732; Jonathan Wood was b. 5/21/1735. The next entry is in these words 'Robert Briscoe and Ann Wood, daughter of Samuel Wood and Anne Wood, his wife were joined together in holy matrimony by Rev. John Urquhart on the 9th of September in the year of our Lord 1736'. After some entries of matters relating to other members of the family, I find the entry Gerard Briscoe (my grandfather) was b. 8/17/1737. Under the date of 11/5/1755 is the following entry: 'I Samuel Wood do give this bible after my decease to my daughter Anne Briscoe during her life and then to my next oldest child that shall be then living and so from one to another as long as any of them live. As witness my hand, Samuel Wood'. By this writing, the old bible at the decease of Samuel Wood passed into the possession of his daughter Ann who had intermarried with Robert Briscoe. From him it passed to his widow Margaret Briscoe and after her death to their oldest surviving daughter who had intermarried with my father, Archibald Stuart of Staunton." Written by Alexander H. H. Stuart. (Carol Mitchell: carolmit@usaor dot net, 6/21/1999).
