Subject: [MDSTMARY-L] John Bowles Land
John Bowles who died in 1664 in Elizabeth City Co, Virginia patented 350 ac land in Norfolk Co, Virginia in 1625. He granted this land to his son in law Richard Jones in 1655. Richard Jones then assigned this land to Richard Bowles and John Waite ( Richard Bowles his son, John Waite, son of his wife Anne). In John's Will 1664 he willed everything to his son John. His son John married Margey Battin in Charles County, Maryland and made will 1675 (the patent was renewed October 12, 1675).
That means a transfer from John Bowles to John Bowles. This John Bowles was married to Mary Jane Scott. John and Jane son John was born 1686 not old enough for the land to be renewed to him when his father died in 1695. This land then went back to Henry Bowles son of John Bowles who died 1664. Henry gave half this land to his half brother John Waite, the other half to sons John and Thomas.
On February 15, 1663/4 John Bowles was granted 350 acres on the Western Branch of Elizabeth River adjoining Capt. William Tucker; this land had been granted to Richard Jones October 18, 1655 and by him assigned to Richard Poole and John Waite, and then assigned to John Bowles; the patent was renewed October 12, 1675 (Nugent, page 497; page 332 shows the original grant to Richard Jones).(Norfolk Co, Virginia)
That JOHN BOWLES was the original owner of THOMAS BOWLES land is proved by a deed of WILLIAM POWELL, Sept.25, 1752, Who bought from John Smith the home plantation left by THOMAS BOWLES to John Smith,1718; the 1752 deed states that the land was part of a patent to JOHN BOWLES in 1625 which was renewed in 1655 (D. B. 15, Page 155). (Norfolk Co, Virginia)
