1729-1733 Charles County, Maryland Land Records; Liber M#2 [TLC]; Page 185. At the request of Daniel Morphey of CC, the following depositions were recorded Nov 28, 1729.
Nov 6, 1729. Came Thomas Dyson, aged about 41 years, and made oath that he was at a place where Preist Hubbert kept Church, and that he, this deponent, saw Danl Morphey decd and his wife Rachell, and with them a child about a year old, which the priest then christened by the name of William, and that the deponent heard the sd Danl say that he was married about 1, 2, or 3 months before that time, which was in Feb. Nov 6, 1729. Came John Gates, aged about 49 years, and made oath that Daniel Morphey of CC, decd, was not married to his wife Rachell until she had a base born child, which was called and known by the name of William, and that of edwards sd Rachell was lawfully married by Common Discourse, unto sd Daniel Morphey, and that after the marriage, sd Rachell had a son born who is now called Daniel. ROBERT ALWORTHY, a Prisoner in the Common Goal of this County committed by vertue of a Mittimus from HENRY ASHTON, Gent. and JOHN CHILTON, Gent., two ofhis Majesties Justices for this County
bearing date the 28th day of May 1715 upon suspicion ofROBERT ALWORTHY's feloniously stealing a Pulpitt Cloath out of the Church in APPAMATTOX in Washington Parish in said County, being brought to the barr by Order of this Court to answer the same, and upon examination being first askt whether he knew the Velvett Cloath then shown to him, he answered yes. 2dly. How came you to know it? He answered this WILLIAM MURFEY and doe you know what is become ofhim? He answered he knows he was a jobber in these parts and that he came from MARYLAND and went thither againe and that he carryed him thither; 4thly How long was it after you bought the Velvett before you carried WILLIAM MURFEY to MARYLAND? He answered last Fall was twelve months. 6thly Did WILLIAM MURFEY ever come back from MARYLAND? He answer noe never as he knew. 7thly. What thoughts had you ofthe Velvett when the same was offered to you for sale? He answered he had noe thoughts about it. 8thly. How long is it since you heard MATTOX CHURCH was robbed? He answered the sixth day ofMay last; 9thly. Did you ever see a Pulpitt Cloath in the Church ofMATTOX? He answered he believes he has. 10thly. Do you known whether the same was of the same colour and the same Velvett as the Velvett now shown you is? He answered for what he knows it might be soe. 11thly. Doe you know whether the Velvett which is now made into breeches be the same which was made use ofin the Church for a Pulpitt Cloath? He answered noe he does not. 12thly. How long has the same been made into breeches? He answered about two months since. 13thly Doe you know what Shipp the aforesaid MURFEY wrought on board? He answered noe. 14thly. Doe you know whether you had the Velvett of the aforesaid WILLIAM MURFEY before you returned the Coat [said to be stolen by him]? He answered he bought it after he had delivered the Coat to Mr. ARRINGTON. 15thly. Doe you know whether the said MURFEY had the Velvett aforesaid in his possession before you returned the Coat to Mr. ARRINGTON? He answered yes. 16thly. Did you hear Mr. ARRINGTON or any other person relate or say at the time you carried the Coat aforesaid to the said ARRINGTON that the aforesaid Church ofMATTOX was robbed and that the Pulpitt Cloath was lost? He answered noe. And thereupon it was ordered that THOMAS ARRINGTON, SOPHIA CODHEW, PATRICK DOYLE,· RUTH CANNADY, TURLOE MONEY and CHARLES CANNADY, Evidences summoned for Our Sovereign Lord the King against the Prisoner at the barr should be called who were severally sworn and examined as followeth;
