      Northumberland County Court February 16, 1698
      Upon the Motion of SARAH MORE [sic] Relict of JAMES MOORE deceased a Probate is granted her of the Last Will and Testament of her deceased husband the Will being proved by the Oaths of GEORGE HUTTON and ALICE WATSON sworn before Capt. RODHAM KENNER and ELIZABETH DERMOT sworn in Court Witnesses thereto and is Recorded.

      TO ALL TO WHOM these presents shall come, JAM; CLAUGHTON sendeth Greeting in our Lord everlasting; Know yee that I ye sd: JAM: CLAUGHTON of ye County of Northumberld: in Virginia, Carpentr., for ye quantity of Three thousand five hundred pounds of tobaccoe & caske to me in hand paid, have sold unto JAM: MOORE, living in ye County of Northumberld: Planter, Seventy five acres of Land being in ye County of Northumberld: in Virginia; Beginning at a marked white Oake on ye North side of MATAPONY RIVER towards ye head of ye same, dividinge this from a parcell of Land sold by NATH: HICKMAN unto Mr. EDM: HELDER, & extending thence West 1/2 Southerly one hundred & twenty poles to a marked Hiccory at ye head of a Valley, thence North:W, sixty poles to a white Oake on ye side of a Branch, thence S: by W: 1/2 Westerly Fifty poles to a red Oake, thence E: S: E: 168 poles to a-white Oake on ye North side of ye Maine Branch of MATTAPONY, thence downe ye sd: Branch & River to ye first stand; To have & to hold ye said Seventy five acres & every part thereof with all profitts belonging unto him ye sd: JAM: MOORE his heires & assignes for ever under ye yearly Rent reserved for ye same to our Sovereeigne Lord ye King, And I ye sd: JAM: CLAUGHTON doe for my selfe my heires p:mise that ye sd: land shall remayne free from all manner of grants whatsoever, warranting the sale thereof unto him ye sd: JAM: MOORE his heires & assignes for ever; In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seale this 12th Martii 1699/70

      JAMES MOORE being formerly excluded (upon complaint of impotency, poverty or such like) from paying any levy, in surprise to the Court, And it being assumed to this Court who are likewise partly sensible thereof, that the said JAMES has a considerable Estate, and does not stand in need of such exclusion, It is therefore ordered that he enter himself into the lists of Tithables for the future in like manner as other Tithable persons do according to Law
