Charles County Land Record Book S#3, 1770-1775; Page 101. Deed or Mortgage. Jan 18, 1771 from Basil Brooke of CC, to Benjamin Machall of Calvert County. Sd Basil Brooke owes sd Benjamin Machall 573 £8 shillings by his bond dated Nov 20, 1770, with legal interest from the day the bond passed by sd Brooke to sd Machall. In order to better secure the payment of the afd sum and to better secure the payment of further sums that Machall may in future advance to Brooke, this deed witnesses that Brooke, for 5 shillings, has given Machall, a parcel of land in CC, being part of his Lordships manor of Calverton, on the south side of the same, next adjoining to the land formerly granted to Walter Pake, bounded by the north side of Indian Cr over against a small island in sd Cr, thence to Kings Cr, containing 500 acres. This is the same parcel of land that was heretofore, about Feb 23, 1767, leased by Edward Loyd, Esq, his Lordship's agent and receiver General, to sd Basil Brooke, for the term of 20 years, renewable forever. If, however, Brooke, by Jan 18, 1775 pays Machall the 573 £8 shillings with legal interest and all further debts to Machall, then this instrument of writing to be void. Signed - Basil Brooke, B Machall. Wit - Young Parran, Charles Grahame (Calvert County JPs). This deed was acknowledged in Calvert County. Certified by W Ireland, [Calvert Co Clk]. Recorded Jan 20, 1771. {Assignment of this mortgage to Mr. James Forbes is recorded in this book page 233, on Jan 4, 1771 [sic]
