      William Rowe’s Will
      In the name of God Amen, I William Rowe of Washington Parish in the county of Westmoreland do make this my last will and testament in the manner and form following;
      First, I give to my daughter Jane Pope Rowe the following slaves; Daniel, Sam, Pegg, Lucy, Winney, Jack, Ben, Dick, Bess, Harry and Kate. Also the feather bed and furniture that stands in the hall shed and she may have a horse and saddle purchased for her.
      I give to my grand daughter Elizabeth Fox, Negro girl Milly.
      I give my whole tract of land to my daughter Anjalellah [Angelica] Fox and to the heirs of her body.
      Item I give all th rest of my slaves to my daughter Anjalellah [Angelica] Fox.
      Tis my desire my wife may have one feather bed and furniture and the use any room in the house, provided she chooses it.
      All the rest of my estate may be equall divided beween my two daughters.
      Tis my desire my estate may not be appraised, but that three honest men may be chosen to set apart and divide the personal estate after the legacies are paid.
      I appoint my son in law Joseph Fox my whole and sole executor of this my last will and testament.
      In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12th day of May 1768.

      At a court held for Westmoreland County the 27th day of September 1768 this will was proved according to law by James Degge and George Monroe witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded; and on the motion of Joseph Fox, the executor therein named who made oath thereto according to law and together with William Smith his security entered into and acknowledged bond with condition as law directs, certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.       James Degges' Will
      In the Name of God Amen, I James Degges of Westmoreland County being sick and weak, but of sound mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following.
      Imprimis, I give to my nephew Christopher Edrington the tract of land whereon I now live together with the land purchased by my mother of Jeremiah Murdock and liberty of getting timber for the use of the plantation from the land my father purchased of Bunch Roe, to him and his heirs and for want of heirs, the land be sold to the highest bidder and the money be equally divided between my nieces, Ann Edrington, Elizabeth Edrington and Susannah Edrington.
      I give to my nephew James Degges Dishman, my tract of land lying in the swamp purchased as above by my father of Bunch Roe to him and his heirs and for want of heirs, then the land to be sold and the money to be equally divided among his sisters. Teste my desire that my slaves and cash be equally divided among my sister’s children, my sister Harrison’s daughter Elizabeth excepted, who I desire may only have an equal part of my cash, all the rest of my estate to be sold, and the cash arising from the sale to be equally divided among my sisters Edrington’s and Dishman’s children.
      I leave my nephew Christopher Edrington, and my friend Joseph Fox, executors of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 28th day of December 1777.

      Lovell Massey's Will
      In the Name of God Amen, I Lovell Massey of the parish of Washington in County of Westmoreland being sick and weak of body but of a disposing sense and memory do make and intend this my last will and testament in manner following.
      First, the land given me by my father whereon my mother now lives I give to my two daughters Suckey Massey and Patty Massey to be equally divided between them.
      Secondly, my will and desire is that my wife keep all and singular my estate of what sort soever during her widowhood for her support in my children, and if she should die a widow in my estate be divided between my children, but if she should marry then to be entitled to the one third part as if she had taken her dower.
      I appoint my wife and my worthy friend Mr. Joseph Fox to to be my executors to this my last will and testament. Given under my hand and seal this 22nd day of November 1777.

      At a court held for Westmoreland County the 30th day of June 1778 this will was proved according to law by the oath of William Berryman a witness thereto and the same having been before proved by the oath of William Clutten another witness thereto is ordered to be recorded; and on the motion of Joseph Fox one of the executors therein named who made oath thereto and together with Peter Jett his security entered into and acknowledged bond with conditioned as the law directs, certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.

      To: Joseph Fox of the Commonwealth of Virginia
      For the sum of five shillings current money, the following negroes Sook Nancy Maria Lucy and Anne; for the use of a certain Jenny Pope Causine wife to a certain Gerard Blackstone Causin.

      Charles County Land Records 1790-1792; Liber K#4; Page 56. Deed of Trust. Apr 24, 1790 from Gerard Blackstone Causin of CC. Gentleman, to Joseph Fox Sr of Westmoreland County, VA. Henry Vowles and Zachariah Vowles, both of Stafford County, VA, stand bound unto sd Causin in a bond dated Apr 29, 1789 of the penalty of 900 £, with condition for making the bond void on sd Henry and Zachariah Vowles paying sd Causin the principal sum of 450 £by next Apr 29, The bond was executed by sd Henry and Zachariah to sd Causin in consideration of sundry Negroes sold by sd Causin to sd genry and Zachariah, they being part of the Negroes devised to sd Causin by Rose Dade of VA, by will dated about 1784. Sd Causin, wanting to comply with the intention of Rose Dade by applying the sd bond and monies due thereon arising from the sale of sd Negroes to the use of one or more of the children of sd Causin, now this deed witnesses that sd Gerard, for 10 shillings, has sold to sd Joseph Fox Sr, the bond from sd Henry and Zachariah to sd Gerard and the 450 £now thereupon due and owing, as afd and all money now due by virtue of the same bond, upon trust that the bond is assigned to Fox in trust that Fox shall receive the 450 £and invest the same in purchases of Freehold lands in VA, and cause such lands to be settled, conveyed, and assured, for the use and behoof of Nicholas Causin, Nathaniel Pope Causin, and Gerard Newton Causin, sons of the afd Gerard Blackstone Causin, to be equally divided between them, as tenants in common and not joint tenants. Sd Joseph shall not be accountable for any loss. Sd Trustee may reimburse himself for his costs. If sd Joseph dies or wants to quit the trust, then sd Gerard may elect some other person.       Fox to Fox Indenture
      This indenture made the 19th day of February 1793 between Joseph Fox, Sr., of Washington Parish County of Westmoreland of the one part and Joseph Fox, Jr., of the parish and county aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that Joseph Fox, Sr., in consideration of 30 pounds current money of Virginia in hand has sold to Joseph Fox, Jr., all that tract of land lying in the Parish of Washington and County of Westmoreland and now in possession of the said Joseph Fox, Sr., containing by estimation 59 acres and bounded as followeth; beginning at two red oak saplings corner to the land of William Dishman, thence along his line North 20° West 100 poles to three oak saplings in another of the said Dishman’s lines, thence East by North along a line of the land of John Weedon, 97 poles to a red oak sapling corner to John Weedon and in a line of Rosier’s patent, thence along the said Rosier’s line South 37° East 10 poles to a red oak sapling in the line of George Beard, thence along the said Beard’s line South 47° West 17 poles to a hickory sapling corner to the said Beard, thence along another of the said Beard’s lines South 23 ½° East 165 poles to a red oak in the said Beard’s line in the line of the said William Dishman, thence along the said Dishman’s line North 53° West 138 poles to the beginning. In witness whereof the parties to these presents have hereunto set their hands and seals the day month and year first above written.

      Price to Price Deed of Gift
      This indenture made this 1st day of May 1787 between John Price of the Parish of Washington and County of Westmoreland of the one part and John Fox Price of the county and parish aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that John Price for divers good causes and considerations him thereunto moving but especially for the love and affection and 5 shillings has given and released unto the said John Fox Price all the estate both real and personal of the said John Price. In witness whereof the parties to these presents have set their hands and seals interchangeably the day and year first above written.

      Smith to Harvey Deed of Gift
      Know all men by these presents that I Alice Smith now of the County of Westmoreland in consideration of the following particulars always dated and every article to be performed by Sarah Harvey and Elizabeth Harvey of the County aforesaid.
      In the first place the said Sarah Harvey and Elizabeth Harvey engages for themselves their heirs executors administrators to pay two thirds of what she the said Alice Smith may owe the administrators of her late husband John Smith for a Negro wench, Patty and her increase which was sold by them as the property of her late husband aforesaid. The receipt of which she the said Alice Smith hereby acknowledges and thereof do acquit the said Sarah Harvey and Elizabeth Harvey their heirs and assigns; have bargained and sold and delivered by these presents in due form of law unto the said Sarah Harvey and Elizabeth Harvey the following Negroes, viz; Charles, Nan, Julius, Martha, Billy, Billey, Harry, Molly, Armistead, Tom and Winney and her future increase forever. To have and to hold the said bargained premises unto the said Sarah Harvey and Elizabeth Harvey in trust. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 14th day of November 1802.
