Charles County Maryland Land Record Liber Z#2, 1744-1753; Page 174. At the request of Thomas Bates, the following lease was recorded on Aug 17, 1747.
Jul 7, 1747 from Geo: Dent of CC, Gent, to Thos Bates of Prince Georges County, Gent, for 60 £gold Virginia currency, the lease to sd Bates, during the natural life of sd Thos Bates and Mildred, his wife, and to commence from next Jan 1, a tract of land purchased by sd Geo Dent of Newnan Tomkins, being part of a tract of land called Tomkins Purchase, lying in CC, and bounded as by the deed thereof dated Aug 10r 1737, and a further agreement to the bounds dated May 14, 1742. Said parcel of land is supposed to contain about 175 acres. Thomas Bates agrees, within 19 years, to pay sd Dent a further sum of 25 £gold Virginia currency and the rents due to the Lord Proprietary on the premises. Also, Bates will shingle and finish the dwelling house on the premises, and commit no waste. If Thomas Bates survives his wife afd, and wants to leave the premises, then the same shall revert and vest in sd Geo Dent. Signed - Thos: Bates, Geo Dent. Wit - Robt. Yates, Arthur Lee. Ann, the wife of the said Geo Dent, released her dower.
