  • Notes
    • === Research notes from Tom Johnson

Theophilus Beall, is my third great-grandfather. Here is a summary from my notes:

      - He was born about 1798: Source, 1850 United States Federal Census, Year: 1850; Census Place: Bladensburg, Prince George's, Maryland; Roll: M432_295; Page: 11A; Image: 290.

      - On 16 January 1817, he married Mary Ellen Beall (1800-abt. 1870), perhaps a cousin, in Washington, D.C. (Source: "District of Columbia Marriages, 1811-1950," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XLZS-84Z : accessed 16 Dec 2013), Theophilus Beall and Ellen Beall, 1817).

      - In the will of his brother, Archibald, probated on 8 September 1835, Theophilus is bequeathed three slaves and the residue of the estate "for the support and maintenance" of their sister, Helen Beall. Source: "Maryland Register of Wills Records, 1629-1999," images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GT1L-2FB?cc=1803986&wc=SNYC-927%3A146535401%2C147214001 : 20 May 2014), Prince George's > Wills 1833-1854 vol PC > image 1 of 284; Hall of Records, Annapolis, Liber TT no. 1 1808-1833 Liber PC no. 1 1833-1854, page 49.

      - In the 1840 Census, Theophilus is present with a family of eight and four slaves. This Census is for District 1 (Vansville) and 2 (Bladensburg) in Prince George's County. The location of the property the Bealls were living on is near present day Lanham, Maryland, in District 2. Source: 1840 United States Federal Census, Year: 1840; Census Place: Prince Georges, Maryland; Roll: 169; Page: 15; Image: 37; Family History Library Film: 0013186.

      - On 14 January 1842, for $690 paid by Theophilus, he acquires "Walker’s Farm," bounded by property owned by the late Richard Beall, from Howerton and Susan Cross. Susan Beall Willett was the daughter of Azel Beall and Martha Soper (see attached from Maryland Land Records).

      - On 16 October 1843, Theophilus Beall and Stephen Onions execute a land deal, in which, for $67.50, Theophilus buys 6 ¾ acres of land called "Gamefield" (see attached from Maryland Land Records).

      - On 1 October 1849, Theophilus and "Ellen" Beall execute another land deal with Stephen Onions. For $100, Onions acquires a parcel of land called "Greenfield" in Prince George’s County (see attached).

      - On 10 June 1850, two separate transactions involving the purchase of "Walker's Farm;" the first, a purchase by Theophilus Beall for $750 and the second, a purchase of 19 3/4 acres for $260 (see attached).

      - On 11 June 1850, a deed with Richard B. Beans whereby Theophilus sells for $250 a portion of the Walker's Farm land, 10 acres, mentioning land formerly conveyed by William Bowie to Agel Beall years before.

      - On 28 June 1850, he appears in the 1850 Census in the Bladensburg District. Living with Theophilus and family is his sister, Helen. According to page 365 of the Population Schedule, Theophilus owned four mulatto slaves, three female (ages 65, 29 and 5 months) and one male (age 2). Source: 1850 United States Federal Census, Year: 1850; Census Place: Bladensburg, Prince George's, Maryland; Roll: M432_295; Page: 11A; Image: 290.

      - He died before 14 May 1852 in Prince George’s County, when son Richard Henderson Beall was administrator of his estate. Source: See Maryland Register of Wills, Liber JH, No. 1, Folios 430 and 646. Son Richard Henderson opted admin (PG Admin Bonds JH2:144).

      - Theophilus Beall died without a will in May 1852. He left a 95-acre parcel of land about which his children petitioned the court on 8 August 1854 to sell because it was incapable of division. The land was eventually sold and released in 1857 (see attached file).
